Have you recently connected your nuvi to the computer and updated the firmware?
No data is transmitted from the satellites that can be 'downloaded' to the device, so what likely happened is that the unit was updated recently, and the Bluetooth was initiated at some point, which caused the unit to finish installing the new software at a random time. ..trying to "download" updates over the sat connections would use an incredible amount of bandwitdth, considering the number of users out there.
I called tech support, they suggested I connect to their site, download an upgrade (unit is brand new). First time I used GPS, it actually went from 0 to 100% and the unit worked.
Next time I turned it on, locked screen ' Updating bluetooth firmware 0%'. My unit did the same thing and I was given the following procedure by garmin.
Note: This is for a 550c Street pilot1) Turn on unit2) Press VIEW MAP3) Press SPEED in lower left hand side of map4) This will bring you to the Trip meter screen on this screen press the round speedometer at the top of the screen for about 10 seconds this will bring you to the SYSTEM BIOS.5) From this point forward be careful you can mess up your unit by changing the wrong thing.6) Press NEXT until you come to the BLUETOOTH STATUS screen.7) Now press UPDT P this should complete your update. We need to try and delete these files that are not loaded correctly. The unit is trying to open a update file on your unit but not reading itcorrectly. GCD 6) Close out of the "My Computer" window or this folder Now we want to check your Bluetooth version.
To delete the update file, please follow these steps:1) Connect device to computer with the USB cable2) Once it is connected, you will need to open the Street Pilot drive. We need to try and delete these files that are not loaded correctly. Disconnect the unit from the USB cable and let the unit power back on.

The question I would ask Garmin would be why it took so long to update after doing the conventional web update.
I assume you have used the bluetooth in those two weeks. All they do is transmit a signal with their id, and the time the signal left the satellite.
If you prefer your maps free, you can use open source maps from Open Street Map.
